Challenge
The construction of a new railway bridge over the Biobío River in central Chile required the installation of 62 steel-reinforced concrete beams. While most beams were positioned using a beam launcher or two cranes, three of the largest asymmetric-shaped beams—each weighing up to 168 tons—needed to be installed over a commuter highway and railway using only a single crane due to space constraints. The challenge was to lift and precisely position these beams efficiently, safely, and without unnecessary rigging adjustments.

Solution
After consulting with Engineered Rigging, leading heavy lift contractor Tecnogruas selected the Enerpac SyncHoist synchronous hoist system to assist in the maneuvering and placement of the three largest beams.
The Enerpac SyncHoist is a below-the-hook sling adjuster, also known as a hydraulic turnbuckle, designed to provide precise positioning for heavy lifting applications. It consists of hydraulic cylinders that allow for synchronous lifting and lowering, as well as independent cylinder control for balancing, tilting, and positioning loads. The system is operated wirelessly by a single user, offering high precision with an accuracy of +/- 1 mm over the full stroke. By using SyncHoist, operators can efficiently manage heavy and complex loads with improved control and safety.
For the project, Engineered Rigging supplied four Enerpac SyncHoists with a combined capacity of 376 tons, a diesel hydraulic SyncHoist pump, and large 400-ton capacity shackles. During lifting operations, the SyncHoists were attached to the crane, enabling Tecnogruas engineers to level each beam before swinging it into position. The SyncHoist system ensured precise placement with minimal rigging adjustments, improving safety and efficiency while reducing project time.
By leveraging the advanced capabilities of the Enerpac SyncHoist, Tecnogruas successfully installed the three asymmetric beams with a single crane, demonstrating the system's precision and effectiveness in complex lifting scenarios
